The material in this folder focuses on the career of Florence Hartman Wells (1901-1963). While serving as the first woman deputy clerk of the Toledo Municipal Court, she received her bachelor of law degree from the Univesity of Toledo in 1923. She progressed to be the first woman in Ohio to be elected to both branches of the Ohio Legislature: the House in 1924; the Senate in 1927. In 1928 she became the first woman assistant Lucas County prosecutor. Images in this folder include portraits, a Toledo Bar Association memorial, online and print sources, and newspaper articles.
Ruth McClendon Whickum
These items are images from digital and paper sources that were gathered for the Toledo Women Lawyers History Project (TWLHP). The material in this folder focuses on the career of Ruthe McClendon Whickum (1930-1992). Her legal career began with her graduation from the Law School at the University of Toledo in 1972, where she had attended night classes while working with the Toledo Public Schools (TPS) Board of Education. She continued working with the TPS Board of Education while doing legal research and drafting briefs and legal documents after passing the bar in 1972. She worked for a few years in the late 1970s and early 1980s in the Wichita, Kansas school system, but returned to Toledo and practiced law full-time beginning in 1984. She handled a wide variety of family, probate, and criminal law, and had a certification to try death penalty criminal cases. Images in this folder include a portrait, a scanned page from the Toledo Bar Directory, a Toledo Bar Memorial, a collection of information collected by the TWLHP, census and marriage documents obtained online, and a variety of scanned school yearbook photos that included both photos and her various job titles. An article after her death and obituary are also included.
